Today we did an easy sensory activity to go along with our Little Blue Truck Preschool Unit! I whipped up a batch of oobleck, which is something I remember playing with as a child, and I couldn’t wait to see Rilynn’s reaction to it. You only need 4 items to re-create this simple, yet extremely entertaining activity (Below are affiliate links for your convenience).
+ farm animal figures
+ unsweetened cocoa
Oobleck is created from cornstarch and water. The reason that it is such an awesome sensory item, is that if mixed in the right proportions, it’s solid when you scoop it up and squeeze it, but turns to liquid and “melts away” when you open your hands! You start by mixing 1 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup water. At this point I added in a few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa to make the oobleck look like mud and also smell delicious. Start mixing everything together (it will be very stiff). Begin adding water a little at a time until you reach the consistency that I mentioned above. You’ll notice that the mixture hardens as you stir and then looks like liquid again a few seconds later. If it becomes too runny, simply add a little more cornstarch!
Pour your oobleck into a tray or bowl and add your farm animals. I looked everywhere for a blue truck, but couldn’t find one. When I handed Rilynn the tray, I asked her if she remembered the trucks and animals getting stuck in the book. She told me that they got stuck in mud – and then I revealed the tray. She immediately stuck her finger in the oobleck and licked it! Thankfully this is taste safe, but her face showed that this was not, in any way, chocolate pudding like she assumed.
She immediately became fascinated with the awesomeness of the oobleck. I purposely waited until her dad came home to make this since he had no idea what oobleck was. Before I knew it, all three of us were sitting around the table and playing with the mud. Rilynn continued playing for over 30 minutes and only stopped because it was bath time. This is a must try activity and a wonderful way to explore Little Blue Truck!
